ALAN CHAN

“I SEE IN OLIVIA's WORK A DELICACY AND SENSITIVITY THAT COMES FROM THE REBEL IN HER, CRITIQUING THE MOMENT AS SHE PHOTOGRAPHs IT. HER PORTRAITS DO NOT ONLY CONVEY EXTERNAL BEAUTY, BUT HAVE A DEEPER VISUAL LANGUAGE AS SHE BRINGS READER INTO THE SOUL OF THE IMAGE”

Renowned designer and artist Alan Chan has, in over 50 years, created a magnificent portfolio of over 1,000 brands, and won more than 600 international design awards. Since 2000, Mr. Chan has ventured into the fine arts, exhibiting in Hong Kong, mainland China, Japan, Singapore, and Italy as well as the United States. His pieces are in the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, National Art Museum of China, Shanghai Art Museum, Hong Kong Museum of Art, M+, and Hong Kong Heritage Museum, as well as private collections worldwide, and have twice been selected for the Shanghai Biennale (2002, 2006) and the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Award (2010, 2012). In August 2023, a large solo exhibition titled Alan Chan: Collecting Inspiration for Design was held at Phillips’ Asia Headquarters

MAN LIM CHUNG

EVERY PHOTOGRAPH IS A DELICATE, POETIC, SILENT DIALOGUE, SHAPED SIMPLY BY SMAILL DETAILS, BUT REVEALING DEEP FEELINGS. OLIVIA EXPLORES AND CAPTURES WOMEN's ROLES, IDENTITIES AND STRUGGLES, THEIR VULNERABILITY AND STRENGH IN STILL IMAGES.

Award-winning filmmaker and art director Man Lim Chung has received multiple accolades, including several Best Art Direction and Best Costume & Make Up Design awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards. He is committed to promoting the creative status of artists and designers in the local film industry, and made his directorial debut in 2020 with the documentary Keep Rolling.

CATHERINE SHAW

OLIVIA's WORK HOLDS PARTICULAR SIGNIFICANCE AT A TIME WHEN DISCUSSIONS AROUND GENDER EQUALITY, REPRESENTATION, AND MENTAL HEALTH ARE EVER MORE ESSENTIAL. HER PORTRAITS SERVE AS A POWERFUL REMINDER OF THE ROLE THAT VISUAL ART PLAYS IN SHAPING SHARED NARRATIVES.

Leading writer and consultant Catherine Shaw specialises in architecture and design, and her books include award-winning monographs on designers and architects Alan Chan and William Lim. She has also published books on architect André Fu, and on Beijing-based OPEN Architecture's most significant cultural projects across China. She divides her time between Hong Kong and London.

OLIVIA TSANG, AUTHOR AND PHOTOGRAPHER FOR EXTREMELY

"FOR A COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHER, TO CREATE A PHOTO ART BOOK IS SUCH AN INTIMATE ADVENTURE. AN HONEST, TANGIBLE EXPRESSION OF MY EXPERIENCE OF DEPRESSION, THE EXTREME COLOURS VERSUS BLACK AND WHITE PORTRAITS AND THE WAY THEY ARE ARRANGED IS A NARRATIVE OF CALM AND CHAOS, CLARITY AND DESPERATION. I'M GRATEFUL TO AESTHETIC AUTHORITIES SUCH AS ALAN CHAN AND MAN LIM CHUNG AND CATHERINE SHAW, WHO NOT ONLY EXPRESS THEIR FEELINGS, BUT ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO A GENDER- NEUTRAL CONVERSATION ABOUT WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT.”

Olivia Tsang is a photographer from Hong Kong. In March 2024, “A WORD” her first photography exhibition took place at Hong Kong Arts Centre, 20 medium format photographs, using photography's fleeingnature as a silent conversation with the subjects. A regular contributor for magazine covers, fashion and jewellery editorials for international titles such as Harper’s Bazaar, Esquire, Vogue, commercial clients includes Boucheron, Cartier, Chanel, Chopard, Gucci, Prada, Tiffany, Van Cleef & Arpels and more.
